..Humble beginnings is an understatement considering where I come from. I grew up in a small town called Lawton, Oklahoma. A small military town that only takes 15 minutes to get from one side to the other. It was big enough to never see the same person twice, but small enough to know everyone's business. I attempted to sing my first solo at the age of six at Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. I vividly remember standing there with the mic in my hand looking out at the congregation, and crying big crocodile tears before I could even get a note out. The song was His Eye Is On The Sparrow. It was so bad my grandmother had to come take the mic and finish singing the song as I went to back to my seat embarrassed. I refused to sing anything other than background in the Youth Choir for the next 3 years until another wave of confidence hit at the age of nine. I had another opportunity to sing a solo to which I agreed. I practiced and practiced. I woke up singing the song. I went to sleep singing the song. The song was on repeat non-stop. You know what that song was? Testify by Dottie Peoples. When people from the church heard that I was going to be singing a solo, I had adults come to me and say, "Don't get up there and cry like last time." Regardless of what their words were intended to do, I had such confidence that I could be successful in singing my solo. And I was. It was the best song of the entire program. From that moment on, I've been singing and I haven't looked back...
