#Worship is my passion. #Worship brings me joy. #Worship is why I decided to pursue music full time. Through this new series on #Worship I want to share what I've learned so far through my experiences as a worship leader. There is a lot I know and a lot that I still have left to learn, but what I have I freely give!
It seems as if in today's worship culture that the title of "praise and worship leader" is coveted. It seems like that's all people want to do in the church. They want to be on the praise team and leading songs. Those same people fail to realize that leading worship is not about having a mic. It's not about being in front of people. It's not about showing off your talent. It is about leading the people into worship. It is about taking the people on a journey to and in the presence of God. It is about creating an atmosphere for God to move and operate in the hearts of the people.
The job of the worship leader is so important! Many times they are the ones people hear the most besides the Pastor. So many times we sit in worship services under leaders who can run all up and down the scale, but don't run to the throne. They give us commands: lift your hands, stand up, clap your hands, open your mouth, tell your neighbor x, y, and z, but can't command the atmosphere to change. I have learned that if worship leaders are not good stewards over worship services, they do a disservice to the people. Proverbs 18:21 says, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue..." If worship leaders aren't spiritually prepared for the task, then they could be singing death over the congregation. That's serious! You may be wondering why all hell is breaking lose in your church? Start by looking at who is speaking and singing over your congregation. Whatever is in a person will surely come out so if a worship leader has junk in them then junk will come out on and manifest in the people.
It is very important to know that you cannot lead people to a place you've never been. If you never get into the presence of God on your own, how can you take other people into the presence of God? How can you lead them and show them how to get there, if you've never done it yourself? Worship leaders must first lead themselves in worship. They must know how to get there on their own before taking anyone else.
